Piezoresisitve pressure sensor for high accuracy oil pressure measurement application
2015-01-22

piezoresisitve pressure transducer combined with MCP9700A temperature sensor for high accuracy oil pressure measurement application

Applications: measure the fluid level inside small oilfield chemical tanks. The tanks contain chemicals that are used to dissolve paraffin and asphaltenes that are typically produced from oil wells. These chemicals are normally hydrocarbon based - for instance, xylene and toluene - and are not corrosive to metal or most plastics.

The tanks are situated outdoors so are they are subjected to wide temperature ranges. They are normally made of polyethylene with stainless steel fittings. They are typically installed horizontally and the total interior fluid height is about 25" to 40". Only a small amount of chemical is injected into the produced stream of oil. A full tank may last for a month or more before refilling, so that the level may change less than 1/4" per day.

The pressure sensor would be installed on a 'T' fitting on the output line of the tank and the output reading will be sent to a small module with an onboard CPU and cell modem. The system will read the pressure (mV) and transmit the pressure data once per day to an Internet server (note: systems operate on 3 to 5V).
